Phototherapy
by visible light frequencies is part of a wide range of diagnostic
and therapeutic treatments derived from the electromagnetic spectrum. These
run through radio waves to infra red, through the visible spectrum and on
to ultra violet, X-rays and radiology. Light therapy using natural sunlight
has been practiced for centuries, far longer than any other parts of the
spectrum and as long ago as 1903 the Nobel Prize for medicine was awarded
for the investigation and clinical application of light therapy. Modern light therapy differs from ancient practice however because we can now select just the parts of the spectrum that we require for specific treatments. By screening out ultraviolet there is no longer any danger of burning the skin, even with prolonged exposure. Sometimes, for instance for muscle strains, we want to apply warm light including infra-red and we can do this if we wish. Sometimes, for instance on burns or sensitive, inflamed wounds the infra-red in the sun's rays, which we feel as heat, would be very uncomfortable. With the light therapy devices which you will find on these pages we can now apply just cool visible light in the correctly balanced frequencies to promote healing in safety and comfort. ![]() This development was first seen widely with low power laser in specialist clinics, especially in physiotherapy and cosmetic procedures and with light boxes for Seasonal Affective Disorder. Now the new generation of light therapy devices is becoming available and we have a wide range of therapies available to us in our own homes at the press of a switch. But there is more. Because light therapy works by assisting the body's own natural repair and immune responses, it does not just treat medical conditions. It also helps the skin to regain its natural suppleness and elasticity and with regular use even reduces fine lines and wrinkles. Cosmetics may improve the appearance of the skin but mask its real condition or in some cases even aggravate it. With light therapy, free from the ageing effects of ultraviolet in natural sunlight, the skin looks healthier because
it is healthier! In fact after just a few minutes of light therapy on the
face the take-up of moisturisers is increased, so improving the effect of
any cosmetic routine. In the Western world we have become more and more reliant upon commercial drugs to cure our ills and many people are now turning away to other forms of treatment. Light has been rediscovered and is frequently hailed as 'the medicine of the future', but it has always been there as a fundamental part of our everyday lives. What is new is our ability to handle and deliver it safely in different ways for different purposes. Modern Western medicine and modern phototherapy are not competitors - they sit well together and both have their place. In most cases treatments combine well, but patients should seek qualified medical advice before ceasing any prescribed medication. For the ultimate in home phototherapy (light therapy) we recommend the Q.Light® range from Switzerland but we also support a growing range of other devices for more economical or portable treatments.
