Skin Cancer
Advanced treatment centres
Non-invasive medical technologies
Private medical centres
MHL is always seeking the best new diagnostic and treatment options for skin cancer.  Some of the treatments and technologies may not already be well known in some countries so we are pleased to provide an introduction here.

Traditionally skin cancer lesions are removed surgically or removed with cryoablation but new, less invasive technigues are becoming available, and which can have excellent cosmetic results.
Diagnosis and evaluation
More centres are now offering photodynamic therapy (PDT) for skin cancer as an alternative to surgical ablation.  A special photosensitising cream is applied carefully to the lesions and allowed time for absorption.  Then a special light, in this case red, incoherent polarised red light within a narrow frequency range, is shone onto the area.  This activates the cream which acts to kill the cancer cells.  Cosmetic results are excellent with no need for surgery.  See the Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) page

MHL promotes Q.Light® non-laser phototherapy from Switzerland, which includes a skin cancer diagnosis facility.  First a revealing cream is spread on the affected area and then blue light with a specific frequency range makes small lesions stand out, which are easily missed with the unaided eye.  See the Q.Light Skin Cancer page.
Virtual biopsy of skin cancer lesion
For full three-dimensional evaluation of a skin cancer lesion a biopsy is required, but this is invasive and can disturb the lesion.  Using the Episcan® dermal ultrasound scanner the skin cancer centre can take a painless virtual biopsy of the lesion with linear and area measurements.  For more details visit the Episcan page
Treatment
radiotherapy for skin cancer on hand
Another new technique is the application of radiotherapy.  Whilst radiotherapy is often used for internal cancers, the machines are large and patients must visit specially constructed radiotherapy centres with shielded radiation bunkers.

Skin cancer is therefore more often treated at a local level, e.g. by surgery.  Now special 'office based' radiotherapy systems are available for the treatment of skin cancer, which can be offered in surgeries, clinics, even in spa settings.
